This book is part of Taschen’s Movie Icons collection, which dedicates volumes to film stars of all time, from Charles Chaplin to Johnny Depp, including Bogart, Brando, De Niro, Marilyn Monroe, and Audrey Hepburn.
The book measures 14.5 x 20 cm, somewhere between a pocket-sized and a trade paperback format, and its edition maintains the high-quality craftsmanship that characterizes this publisher’s products.
Throughout its 192 pages and 150 images, we explore Frank Sinatra’s filmography, from Las Vegas Nights to Cannonball Run II (1984), with texts in Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian.
The selection of images includes not only movie scenes but also behind-the-scenes moments and some curiosities, such as Spanish and Italian posters and the reproduction of a 1940s newspaper article.
The book is completed with a brief career chronology—with some errors and omissions—and a filmography that reveals the titles under which these films were released in Portugal and Italy. Some of these are quite peculiar, such as The Manchurian Candidate, which was titled El mensajero del miedo (“The Messenger of Fear”) in Spain and Và e uccidi (“Go and Kill”) in Italy.
Once again, the filmography includes some inexplicable omissions. Several movies in which Sinatra made cameos, such as Around the World in 80 Days (1956) and The List of Adrian Messenger (1963), are listed, but others like Pepe (1960), The Road to Hong Kong (1962), and The Oscar (1966) are missing. His TV movie Contract on Cherry Street (1977) is also not mentioned.
Despite these shortcomings, the book is a worthwhile acquisition for fans interested in Frank’s acting career. Moreover, it is easily available on the second-hand market at a very affordable price.
