Palatrussardi, Milan

In the 1960s, Manuel Fraga Iribarne, Spain’s Minister of Information and Tourism, coined a slogan to attract foreign tourists: “Spain Is Different,” a truly apt description for the good and the bad.

We shared with you an article about the concert that Frank Sinatra gave at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, which went down in history as a tremendous economic fiasco, watered down by hostile and scripted media coverage. A sample of how “different” Spain was even at a time of social and cultural openness. Behind all the plastic glamor of “La Movida Madrileña” a stubbornly provincial heart continued to beat.

The day after the Madrid concert, The Voice appeared in Milan to inaugurate the Palatrussardi, a stadium that, until its closure in 2011, has hosted sporting events and concerts by world-renowned figures.

And the story in the Italian counterpart in Madrid could not be more opposite; Sinatra attracted a sell-out crowd for the event (it should be noted that the organization chose a smaller venue of 8,479 seats), and more than 20 million people watched the performance live on the state television network.

The press, with some exceptions, was full of praise for the singer, pointing out on the front pages that he bewitched the nation, and classified the concert as one of the greatest successes of his career. Everyone raved about Sinatra’s sound, appearance, mannerisms and mood.

The repertoire was identical to that of Madrid with the absence of “Granada”:

Fly Me To The Moon
Without A Song
What Now My Love
I’ve Got You Under My Skin
Bewitched
Where Or When
witchcraft
My Heart Stood Still
New York New York
Summer Wind
night and day
I Get A Kick Out Of You
Come Rain Or Come Shine
L.A.Is My Lady
The Girl From Ipanema
April In Paris
The Lady Is A Tramp
For Once In My Life
Mack The Knife
All The Way
Strangers In The Night
My Way
