Frank Sinatra Scores A Brand New Top 40 Win On The Charts

Hugh McIntyre, Forbes Magazine

The end of the year is always a big time for the Frank Sinatra estate. His music is popular all year round, but the crooner recorded a lot of holiday material during his lifetime, and millions return to his classics around Christmas. Several albums of his jolly tunes have been released throughout the years—many after his passing—and they seem to become more and more beloved every time they return.

Sinatra scores a brand new top 40 bestseller in America this week on one of the most competitive Billboard charts. He does so not with a just-released project, but rather with a title that’s already familiar to fans, and which is selling very well—seemingly better than almost ever before.

Ultimate Christmas returns to the Top Album Sales chart this week. The holiday compilation is back at No. 40 on the list of the bestselling full-lengths and EPs in the U.S., regardless of style, format, or genre.

Sinatra’s seasonal collection is not new to the Top Album Sales ranking, but it has never risen this high before. Ultimate Christmas enters the top 40 for the first time, more than half a decade after it was first released. The title manages the feat after only 15 frames somewhere on the purchase-focused roster.

Luminate reports that in the past tracking frame, Ultimate Christmas sold another 2,400 copies across America. That sum is up nearly 23% from the period before, when it managed just under 2,000 pure purchases.

As it reaches its new peak on the Top Album Sales tally, Ultimate Christmas also reappears on the Billboard 200. This week, Sinatra’s 2017 gathering of yuletide carols being sung by a choir—but mostly the man himself—lands at No. 129, thanks to a little less than 10,200 equivalent units shifted. That’s not a new peak, though, as it once nearly brought the late star back to the top 10 when it rose as high as No. 12.

Ultimate Christmas is also present on three other Billboard charts this week, as the big day is quickly approaching. The set lifts to No. 4 on both the Jazz Albums and Traditional Jazz Albums rankings, where it’s already previously hit No. 1. Sinatra’s compilation is new to the Vinyl Albums list, where it opens at No. 24.
