Timeless Sinatra
The calendar reminds me that on this day in 1998, Frank Sinatra left this physical world – which was his, we just lived in it – to dwell in the dimension of the eternal. He spent his final years away from public life, struggling with illness and loneliness. His heart, which had withstood more storms than a hundred adventurers could face, broke in a heart attack forged in the smoke of cigarettes, glasses of Jack Daniel’s, and failed loves.
His daughter Tina said he also carried on his conscience the weight of not being a good father and husband. As life and voice faded away, several generations of fans demonstrated their gratitude and respect in an almost overwhelming way through tributes, written words, and recognition of his extensive artistic work. Even the most critical voices sheathed their daggers to acknowledge the invaluable contribution he made to 20th-century popular culture.
And today, 27 years after that sad day, it is clear that all things mundane are fleeting, and what is sublime is eternal. Frank Sinatra’s artistic and personal legacy remains as alive and relevant as ever. The Sinatra family’s work in preserving and promoting Frank’s work is admirable, and the boundless love of his followers elevates every song, every image, every frame, and every memory to infinite heights.
The world is a more beautiful and livable place every time, in some corner, The Voice is heard, soothing us with his beautiful and universal stories of love and heartbreak.
