ALL ALONE
By Mahnuel Muñoz
On November 10, 1962 the album “All Alone” entered the Billboard charts, crowned at that time by the debut album of the folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary.
The album was recorded between January 15 and 17, 1962 with a 36-piece orchestra, all guided by Gordon Jenkins‘ arrangement Gordon Jenkins, which provides unique romantic echoes, is the perfect choice to create the atmosphere of the album, whose repertoire at the rhythm of a waltz mixes standards – mainly by the essential Irving Berlin – with more recent songs composed by the tandem of composers and friends of Frank, Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen.
The album weaves a sonic tapestry similar to “In The Wee Small Hours” and “Where Are You?“, and in some ways is a somber sequel to “Sinatra & Strings,” recorded just a couple of months earlier; If “Strings” is a romantic album and passionate monument to love, “All Alone” is the dark and desolate tribute to its loss.
It is an anachronistic and strange work in a time of social contestation and return to musical roots; In fact, it was Sinatra’s most commercially poorly received LP to date (number 25 on the charts). However, its truth has made its way through the underbrush of the decades and the tragic events that have plagued them, becoming a sadly accurate soundtrack. The disturbing cover is a true reflection of its desolate beauty and its emotionality worthy of the Voice’s darkest albums.
Perfect for those cold days when you want to be locked up, oblivious to the madding crowd, relaxing in your crevices.
