Frank Sinatra Biography (1945-1946)
Frank Sinatra Biography… The years 1945 and 1946 were among the most productive of Frank’s career in terms of recordings, as he immortalized a good list of hits for the Columbia label, including “Soliloquy,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Embraceable You,” “Nancy,” “Put Your Dreams Away,” “That Old Black Magic,” and “September Song.”
In April 1945, he met Ava Gardner at a party on Sunset Strip. Both were married at the time: she to Mickey Rooney. However, Sinatra was struck by a spark of desire for her, a passion that would consume him throughout his life.
1945 was also a memorable season for his film career, with the releases of Anchors Aweigh and The House I Live In, two films that showcased new and revealing qualities of Sinatra, both of which enjoyed great critical and commercial success. The first revealed him as a capable comedic actor and willing dancer, while the second highlighted his social commitment to racial and religious tolerance. The impact of this short film led CBS to hire him for a series of lectures at various educational institutions across the country.
Frank concluded 1945 with a series of concerts in the Wedgwood Room of the prestigious Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, expanding his usual teenage audience to include an adult, sophisticated crowd.
In March 1946, one of the most important events in Frank’s career, and by extension in the history of popular music, took place: the release of The Voice of Frank Sinatra, the artist’s first LP, on the Billboard charts. With this step, Frank transcended his role as a teen idol to become a seriously regarded artist among adult audiences. The album is a collection of love songs, performed with exquisite tenderness and softness, dressed in beautiful arrangements by Axel Stordahl.
Critics and the public wholeheartedly praised this work, highlighting the subtlety of his performance and Stordahl’s exceptional arrangements, and it topped the charts for seven weeks. His presence in films in 1946 was limited to a cameo in Till The Clouds Roll By, a biopic about the life and works of Jerome Kern. His participation was to sing “Ol’ Man River.”
In his personal life, an unfortunate event occurred at the end of 1946, when his wife Nancy found a diamond bracelet in the glove compartment of his newly purchased Cadillac. Nancy thought it was a gift for her, but that same night, during a party at the Sinatra home with a wide array of invited stars, she saw the bracelet on the wrist of actress Marilyn Maxwell. Furious, Nancy confronted her husband, leaving everyone present stunned by the unexpected confrontation.
