FRANK AS DIRTY HARRY
“Dirty Harry“, the most emblematic character of Clint Eastwood, was very close to being interpreted by Frank Sinatra.
Warner Brothers bought the script of “Dirty Harry“, with Frank Sinatra as the protagonist. Sinatra accepted the role; However, he had seriously hurt his hand in a karate fight in “The messenger of fear” eight years before. His problem of the hand was aggravated for years of holding his microphone on stage. Eventually he felt he would have trouble holding Magnum 45, so he ended up declining.
In addition, his father had recently died, so Sinatra decided that he wanted to do something lighter. That year he assumed the main role in the comedy “Duel of Pillos“.
Then, the role was offered to John Wayne, who said:
“There are three reasons why I did not accept Harry’s role. I don’t like to offer me the rejections of Sinatra. Call it pride. The second reason is that I thought Harry was a dishonest policeman of a narrow mind, because when I saw the photo I I realized that Harry was the type of paper I had frequently done: a guy who lives within the law, but breaks the rules when he really has to do it to save others. Movies “.
Robert Mitchum and Burt Lancaster were also offered the role. Mitchum said: “It’s a piece of garbage.” In a later interview, Mitchum said;
“When the producers say: ‘We really want you to do this script’, I answer, ‘I would need a lot I will do for any amount“.
Burt Lancaster rejected the main role because he disagreed with the violent and right -wing morals of history. He believed that the role and plot contradicted their belief in “the responsibility of criminal and social justice and the protection of individual rights.”
Both Steve McQueen and Paul Newman rejected the role. McQueen refused to make another “police film” after “Bullit.”
Believing that the character was too “right -wing” for him, Paul Newman suggested that Clint Eastwood would be good at that. And the rest is history. And for more curiosity that can wake us how Frank’s Harry would have been, no one like Clint to “make our day.”
