SOME NICE THINGS I’VE MISSED
By Mahnuel Muñoz
On August 3, 1974, Frank Sinatra entered the charts with the album “Some nice things I’ve missed”, an album in which the Voice covered pop-rock hits of the time with arrangements by Don Costa.
This was the last studio album of new material that Sinatra released in the 1970s, since after his triumphant return to the stage in 1974 he decided to put his efforts into touring.
The album was completed in a period of six months (from December 1973 to May 1974), something completely unusual for Sinatra, who used to finish his works in a few intense days, although it is fair to emphasize that most of the music was completed in the May sessions.
The main reason for this prolonged gestation was undoubtedly his busy performance schedule, but the fact that Frank’s raw material for this album was unfamiliar to him could also have intervened and therefore his main motivation was to achieve some relevant result. in lists.
Frank’s forays into contemporary music of the 1960s and 1970s were received unevenly by the public, since sometimes, despite the singer’s good work, the material chosen was not up to par with his distinguished style.
This was the case with this album, a complete artistic roller coaster that alternates forgettable and sublime moments that failed to rise from position 48 on the Billboard charts; neither classical fans nor younger audiences were seduced by his versions of “Sweet Caroline” or “You are the sunshine of my life”, but the years have been kind to this work: today it is difficult not to enjoy the charming cockiness that Sinatra displays in “Satisfy Me One More Time”, not smiling at his fun in “Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree” or getting emotional with some of the most beautiful ballads in his entire repertoire (“You Turned My World Around”, “If”, “What Are You Doin’ The Rest Of Your Life?”). We are still looking forward to having been able to hear Frank’s readings of two songs that were considered for the album, “If You Could Read My Mind” by Gordon Lightfoot and “It Takes Too Long (To Learn To Live Alone)” by Alice Clark .
Look for this album and welcome it with affection. It’s too beautiful to miss.
