“RECORDS TO LISTEN AGAIN”

By Mahnuel Muñoz

On December 19, 1960, Frank Sinatra began recording with Reprise, his own record label.

It is a brave step, considering that at Capitol he has completed his most brilliant and enduring period.

But Sinatra needs to feel freer and flees from the comfort zone that suffocates art, and even breaks the exclusivity with Nelson Riddle, Billy May and Gordon Jenkins, the golden trio of arrangers who shaped his sound in the last decade, to provide new textures to their songs.

Throughout the 1960s Sinatra would continue to evolve in the field of swing with Johnny Mandel, Sy Oliver and the always effective Billy May, and above all the totemic albums with Count Basie; But if this new journey is characterized by something, it is innovation, exemplified in albums that cover a wide range, from the monumental orchestral sound of “Sinatra & Strings” and “The Concert Sinatra” to the minimalist avant-garde of “A Man Alone” and ” Watertown“, and along the way, more or less successful forays into pop-rock – among which are his greatest commercial successes – and the sublime and timeless tandem with Antonio Carlos Jobim.
