Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan and Count Basie: London, November 1975

By Mahnuel Muñoz

The stage of the London Palladium (London) smells like a legend. Since its inauguration, the day after Christmas 1910, it has hosted a multitude of shows of all disciplines, and its history is especially linked to the Royal Variety Performances, events to benefit an association that helps workers in the manufacturing industry. entertainment who are in vulnerable situations. The music written by the staff of the 20th century has vibrated on its walls, from Duke Ellington to Rufus Wainwright, passing through Beatles, Rolling Stones, Marvin Gaye, Elton John and, of course, Francis Albert Sinatra.

Recently we told you about the legendary concerts that took place at the Uris Theater in New York and that united Sinatra with Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie, a dream triumvirate, during the first stages of the fall of 1975 in the City That Never Sleeps.

In November, before leaving for Israel to offer a series of recitals that I have recently told you about in the group, The Voice and Sassy flew to the Palladium to unite their songs in the unmistakable sound bed of the Count Basie Orchestra, with whom both had previously worked. The suggestive proposal was to replicate the magic of the concerts with Fitzgerald and they did it. The mouths of the attendees opened until they touched the carpet before a brilliant display of the most powerful music in our recent history.

Once again I wonder where the recording technicians were, ready to immortalize the milestone as sculptors of classical Greece. And if there is a recording, languishing silently in some aseptic catacomb, what compelling reason can anyone give for a record with those three surnames not aging with us in our pampered collections? How is it possible that we can only occupy a virtual seat at the Palladium thanks to some contraband recordings, with infamous sound and yet capable of making your skin crawl?

Anyway, with these lemons we have to make lemonade. Here’s to you. We continue singing and traveling.
