“The Frank Sinatra Film Guide”
Daniel O’Brien
Batsford Editorial, London.
“The Frank Sinatra Film Guide”….. Frank Sinatra’s film career, despite being very interesting and having numerous classic titles, has always remained in the shadow of his musical work.
Fortunately there are several available books that collect and analyze their contribution to the cinema, and the object of this article is one of the most practical and interesting.
It was written by Daniel O’Brien, a journalist and film critic, and launched by the London Batsford publishing house in 1998, the year of Frank’s death. Throughout two hundred pages, the author analyzes all the feature films starring Sinatra contributing technical details, dates and anecdotes of each filming and premiere and creating an informative set that allows Frank’s acting facet to know better and encourages to explore his work For the big screen.
At the end of the analysis of the films, appendices are included whith short films, television movies and tapes in which Frank made a cameo, as well as a fascinating list of titles that could be and were not, well because they were canceled, rejected or assigned to other actors. This last section discovers us that Frank could have participated in “Knock Any Door” with Humphrey Bogart, “On The Waterfront” with Marlon Brando or a film called “Pink Tights” with Marilyn Monroe, among many other curiosities.
It is presented as a sober design consultation manual, in fourth format with soft cover and black and white illustrations of each of the films analyzed and has alphabetical and bibliographic index. Its column format makes reading the abundant information, well exposed by O’Brien, is easy and pleasant.
I think that the graphic design of the cover- and of the work in general-is quite improvable, but it is something unimportant compared to the great informative value it offers.
It is possible to find the book in the second -hand market at an economic price, so it is highly recommended.
