THE DEVIL AT 4 O’CLOK

On July 16, 1961, “The Devil At 4 O’Clock” was released, a film directed by Mervyn LeRoy (“The Wizard of Oz,” “Little Women,” “Quo Vadis?”, and together to Frank, “The House I Live In”) and starring Frank Sinatra and Spencer Tracy (“Guess Who’s Coming Tonight”, “Winners or Losers”, “Adam’s Rib”).
It is based on a novel by the British writer Max Catto, who would also make a film, among others, of his book “Murphy’s War” (1971) starring Peter O’Toole.
The soundtrack is the work of George Duning, whose resume includes the music for “Salome”, “Picnic”, “Toys in the Attic” and, as for his work with Frank, “From Here to Eternity” and “Pal Joey” (in collaboration with Nelson Riddle)
On a small volcanic island in the Pacific, Father Donovan (Spencer Tracy) seeks volunteers to rescue a group of leper children trapped in the hills. Frank plays a criminal who, together with two other colleagues and Tracy himself, undertakes the mission. The film covers his return trip, in which Frank’s character falls in love with a blind nurse.
The film was a critical and public failure, and fell far short of covering the more than 5.7 million budget.
